Someone hit my car in a parking lot and actually left a note — I'm genuinely shocked

I just need to share this because honestly it restored a little bit of my faith in humanity.

Went to the grocery store yesterday, maybe 45 minutes tops. Come back out and I can immediately see my rear quarter panel is crumpled. My stomach just dropped. I've had a hit-and-run before and that whole experience was a nightmare — police report, uninsured motorist claim, the works. I started mentally bracing for round two of all that.

But then I notice something tucked under my wiper blade. A handwritten note. Full name, two phone numbers, and even an apology written out. Like an actual, sincere apology. They said they felt terrible and wanted to make it right.

I called the number right there in the parking lot and the person picked up immediately. Super cooperative, already planning to call their insurance before I even asked. We exchanged everything we needed in about ten minutes.

I know this forum sees a lot of the ugly side of accidents — people fleeing scenes, adjusters lowballing, the whole mess. And yeah, I'll still be keeping a close eye on how the claim unfolds because I know it's not always smooth even when the other driver is cooperative. But I just wanted to put something positive out here.

Sometimes people do the right thing even when nobody's watching. That matters.

Has anyone else had a surprisingly decent experience after an accident? Would love to hear it. 🙏

This actually made me smile. After my accident last spring where the other driver took off and I was stuck dealing with everything alone, I really needed to read something like this. Hold onto that feeling — and yes, still document everything carefully as the claim moves forward, but what a relief that you're starting from a good place.

Love this for you, truly. Just one small thing — even cooperative drivers can become less cooperative once their insurance company gets involved. The insurer's job is still to minimize the payout, regardless of how nice the at-fault driver is personally. Get everything in writing and get a repair estimate from your own shop, not just whoever they suggest.

Did you have to escalate, or did they come around after the first ask?

Okay this genuinely warmed my heart. Sharing this with my partner because we've both been so cynical lately. Hope the repair process is quick and painless for you!

Speaking from my old job — the at-fault driver being cooperative actually does make a meaningful difference in how smoothly things move on the claims side. When liability is clear and no one's disputing fault, adjusters can usually process things faster. That said, don't skip getting your own estimate. Shops on an insurer's preferred list aren't always looking out for your best interests.

YES. This is the post I needed today. There's so much doom and gloom online and it warps your sense of how people actually behave. Most folks, when it comes down to it, want to do the right thing. Wishing you a smooth and drama-free claim! ✨

Glad it worked out this way! A few practical things worth doing even in a friendly situation: take dated photos of the damage today if you haven't already, keep a copy of that note (or a photo of it), and save every text or voicemail from the other driver. If anything gets disputed later — even unlikely — you'll be glad you have the paper trail.

Get checked out if you feel any soreness in the next few days, even if you weren't in the car when it happened — that's obviously less of a concern here. But just saying in general, parking lot damage that looks minor sometimes hides structural stuff. Hope the repair is quick!

That lines up with what my adjuster told me too.

Good outcome so far. Keep your expectations realistic through the actual repair and claims process — 'cooperative driver' and 'easy claim' aren't always the same thing. But you're starting in the best possible position, so that counts for a lot.
