Rear-ended at a red light this morning — neck feels fine now but I'm nervous

So this happened just a few hours ago and I'm still kind of shaking. I was completely stopped at a red light on my way to work when someone plowed into the back of me. From what I could tell they barely even braked — just full speed into my bumper.

My car is only about eight months old and there's pretty obvious damage to the rear end. The other driver was in some kind of large work van, so the size difference was not in my favor. We exchanged info, I took a ton of photos, and a police report was filed. Fault seems pretty obvious.

Here's my thing though: right after it happened I felt fine. Adrenaline maybe? But now sitting at my desk a few hours later my neck is starting to feel... stiff? Not screaming pain, just this dull tightness. I've heard whiplash can sneak up on you and I really don't want to brush this off and end up with chronic issues.

Do I wait and see how I feel tomorrow, or do I go get checked out today? I've never dealt with anything like this before. I don't want to be dramatic if it's just regular soreness, but I also don't want to ignore something that turns out to be serious.

Also — does going to the doctor right away actually matter for any potential insurance claim? Or does timing not really affect that?

Any advice from people who've been through this would mean a lot right now. 🙏

Please don't wait. Whiplash symptoms are notorious for being delayed — sometimes it's hours, sometimes it's the next morning when you wake up and can barely turn your head. The adrenaline from the crash absolutely masks pain. Even if it turns out to be nothing serious, getting evaluated creates a medical record of your condition right after the accident. That matters a lot more than people realize. Go to urgent care or an ER today, not tomorrow.

I did the exact same thing — felt okay, went home, woke up the next day and could barely move my neck. Waited two days before seeing a doctor because I thought I was being a baby about it. Honestly wish I'd gone same-day. The soreness you're describing sounds exactly like how mine started.

I used to work claims and yeah, honestly — same-day or next-day treatment carries a lot more weight when we were evaluating injury claims. It's not that a delayed visit automatically sinks you, but it does give us something to point at. The notes in your medical file from right after the accident tell a much cleaner story than ones from a week later. Go get checked out.

Go to the doctor TODAY, not tomorrow. Insurance companies absolutely use gaps in medical treatment against you. If there's even a 48-hour window between the crash and your first visit, their adjusters will argue your injuries must not have been that bad. I've seen it happen to people. Don't give them that opening.

Not legal advice, but from what I've seen: documenting your symptoms as early as possible is almost always in your best interest. Waiting to 'see how it goes' can genuinely complicate things later if you need to make a claim for injuries. Get evaluated, tell the doctor exactly how the accident happened and every symptom you're feeling — even mild ones.

How fast do you think they were going when they hit you? And when you say stiffness — is it both sides of your neck or more on one side? Just asking because the type of impact and where you're feeling it can actually be pretty different situations. Either way getting checked out makes sense, just curious what you're dealing with.

Oh no, I'm sorry this happened to you! Please just go get checked out, even if you feel silly about it. Your health is worth more than an awkward urgent care visit. And you're not being dramatic — a work van hitting you at full speed is a serious impact.

Stop debating it. Go to the doctor. Today. Bring the police report number, write down a timeline of how you felt immediately after vs. now, and tell them everything. You can always find out it's minor — but you can't undo ignoring something that turns out to be real.

The fact that you're paying attention to your body and not just brushing it off is actually a good sign. A lot of people ignore early symptoms and really regret it. You're already ahead of the curve just by asking. Hoping it's just minor soreness and you feel better fast!

Wish I had seen this a month ago — would have saved me a lot of stress.
