Learned the hard way why liability-only is a gamble — please read before you drop coverage

I never thought I'd be the person posting something like this, but somebody in another thread told me to share my experience because it might help someone make a smarter choice than I did.

Couple years back I had a perfectly good sedan, totally paid off. I dropped down to liability-only to save some money every month — probably cutting my premium in half. Made sense at the time. I wasn't a risky driver, I figured I'd never cause an accident, so why pay extra?

Then one afternoon some guy blows through a red light at a busy intersection and T-bones me. Hard. My car was totaled on the spot. Come to find out the guy had a suspended license and zero insurance. Just... nothing.

My insurer? Basically said "sorry, not our problem" — because I didn't have uninsured motorist coverage or comp/collision. I'd stripped all of that out to save maybe $60 a month.

The other driver got cited and a judge eventually told him he owed me the value of the car. Great, right? Except nobody actually made him pay, and I was told pursuing it would cost me more in legal fees and headaches than I'd likely ever collect. So I just... ate the loss. Plus I'd just done a bunch of deferred maintenance on that car right before the crash — new brakes, fresh battery, the works.

I was without reliable transportation for weeks. It genuinely messed up my work situation.

I now carry full coverage including uninsured motorist on my current car even though it's older and not worth a ton. The monthly difference is not that deep and the peace of mind is real.

Just — if you're thinking about dropping down to liability to save money, at least keep your UM coverage. Please.

This hit close to home. Almost the exact same thing happened to me — uninsured driver, my fault-free, and I was the one left scrambling. The part about eating the loss even after a court order is so real. Nobody talks about how unenforceable those judgments can be against someone who has nothing.

That lines up with what my adjuster told me too.

Did the timeline change anything for you? Mine dragged on for weeks.

And this is exactly what insurance companies are counting on. They make dropping UM/UIM coverage so easy and frame it as you being a 'smart saver.' Meanwhile they know statistically how many uninsured drivers are on the road. The math benefits them, not you. Always keep uninsured motorist coverage — always.

The court judgment thing you mentioned is really common and really frustrating. A judgment against someone with no assets or income is sometimes called 'uncollectible' — you technically won but practically can't recover anything. Garnishment and liens are options but they take time and money and don't always pan out. UM coverage bypasses all of that because you're just dealing with your own insurer.

This is really helpful — thank you for posting it.

Worked claims for years. The number of people who called in after being hit by an uninsured driver — with no UM coverage — was genuinely heartbreaking and there was nothing we could do for them contractually. UM coverage is one of the cheapest add-ons relative to what it protects you from. I've seen it pay out more than collision in certain markets. Don't skip it.

Exactly my experience. Persistence paid off in the end.

Bottom line: you can't control who hits you. Liability only protects other people from you. If you want protection for yourself, you need more than that. Full stop.

Wish I had seen this a month ago — would have saved me a lot of stress.

I'm so sorry this happened to you. The part about your work situation suffering really got me — people don't think about the ripple effects of losing a car suddenly. Weeks without reliable transportation can affect so much. I hope things are more stable for you now.

Did you have to escalate, or did they come around after the first ask?

Not legal advice, but what you described — a judgment you can't enforce against an uninsured, asset-free driver — is one of the most common and frustrating situations in personal injury. It's also why most attorneys strongly recommend stacking UM/UIM coverage up to your state's allowed limits. The premium difference is usually minor; the protection gap is massive.

The fact that you're sharing this publicly so others don't make the same call is genuinely kind. Most people just suffer quietly. Someone reading this thread today might make a different choice on their policy renewal because of your post — that's real.

Saving this whole thread. Really appreciate the honesty here.

Did you check whether your state requires insurers to offer UM coverage and get your written rejection of it on file? Asking because in some states if they didn't properly offer it or get a signed waiver, there may actually be an argument that you had it by default. Probably too late now but worth knowing for others reading this.
