How do I know if my truck is totaled before the insurance company even calls me?

So my truck got hit pretty bad two days ago and I'm just sitting here staring at it in my driveway trying to figure out if it's coming back or if I should start shopping for a new vehicle. The whole passenger side got caved in, the door won't open at all, and there's definitely something weird going on with the frame because the gaps around the hood look totally uneven now.

The other driver's insurance has been radio silent since I filed the claim. I called once and got a voicemail. Meanwhile I have no idea if I should even be making plans around having a vehicle again or not.

From what I've been Googling, something about 70-80% of the vehicle's actual cash value is like the threshold where they just write it off? But I honestly don't know if that's accurate or if it changes by state or what.

Has anyone been in this situation where you could just tell from the damage that it was gone? The frame thing is what's really getting me. I've heard frame damage alone can push a vehicle into totaled territory even if the body damage seems manageable.

I'm also kind of nervous that if they do declare it totaled, they're going to lowball me on what the truck was actually worth. It was in really good shape before this happened — new tires, well maintained, no prior accidents.

Any insight from people who've been through this would genuinely help. Just tired of waiting and not knowing.

The frame thing is the tell, honestly. When mine got hit last year the shop took one look at the frame rails and said it was over before they even pulled out a calculator. Insurance confirmed total loss three days later. If you're seeing uneven panel gaps, that's almost always frame-related and those repairs get expensive fast.

Get an independent estimate from a body shop right now. Don't wait on the insurance company. Call a reputable local shop, have them look at it, and ask them directly: is this repairable or is it likely a total? They'll give you an honest read and it costs nothing for an estimate. Then you have real information instead of just guessing.

I used to work on the claims side and here's the honest truth: adjusters use software — CCC One is a common one — to calculate actual cash value, and it pulls comparable vehicles in your market. The threshold for total loss varies by state, some are 75%, some 80%, a few are different. Frame damage almost always drives repair estimates way up because shops have to account for structural alignment work, and that alone can tip the math.

My advice: don't wait for them to call you. Call every single day. Be politely persistent. Squeaky wheel gets the grease in claims departments, I've seen it a thousand times.

I hope you're doing okay physically too — sometimes with hard impacts people feel fine for a day or two and then things show up. Just make sure you're paying attention to how your body feels and not getting so caught up in the vehicle situation that you ignore any symptoms.

Following up on this — any update on how it turned out?

Whatever number they come back with for the truck's value, don't just accept it. They're going to use the lowest comparable sales they can find. You're allowed to push back with your own comps — go find similar trucks in similar condition on dealer lots and private listings and send them screenshots. I fought mine and got significantly more than their first offer.

Adding this: keep copies of every email. It mattered for me.

A couple of things worth knowing: first, if it IS totaled, you're entitled to the actual cash value of the vehicle plus any taxes and fees you'd have to pay to replace it in most states — a lot of people don't realize the taxes are part of the settlement. Second, document everything about the truck's condition now — service records, photos, anything showing it was well-maintained. That documentation matters when they're calculating value.

Not legal advice, but frame damage is a significant factor in total loss determinations precisely because structural repair costs are high and resale value takes a major hit even after repairs. If you feel the ACV offer is unfair when it comes, you do have options — including hiring an independent appraiser or invoking appraisal clauses if your policy has one. Worth knowing that exists before you feel pressured to just accept a number.

Ugh this is so stressful, I'm sorry you're dealing with it. The not-knowing is honestly the worst part. Hang in there and keep pushing them for answers — you deserve to know what's happening with your own claim.
