Got clipped on the highway, zero damage, driver sped off — do I even need to report this?

So this happened yesterday morning during my commute. I was merging onto the interstate and a pickup in the next lane just... drifted into me. Side of my bumper kissed their passenger door area. Both of us kind of jerked apart and I immediately slowed down and pulled toward the shoulder expecting them to do the same.

They did not. They just accelerated and disappeared into traffic.

I got off at the next exit and walked around my car for like ten minutes in a gas station parking lot. Couldn't find so much as a scratch. No paint transfer, nothing. I felt fine physically — a little shaky from adrenaline but no pain anywhere.

Called the non-emergency police line and the officer I spoke to basically said without damage or injury there's nothing to file. He suggested I just move on with my day.

So now I'm sitting here wondering:

1. Do I call my insurance and tell them anyway? I'm scared of my rates going up for something that wasn't my fault and left zero damage. 2. Is there any realistic chance the other driver files a claim against ME? Like, could they invent some story and come after my insurance? 3. Should I have pushed harder for a police report even if they didn't want to take one?

I know this is probably a non-issue but the "what if that driver makes something up" scenario is living in my head rent-free. I didn't get their plate either which I'm kicking myself about. Anyone dealt with something similar where you just had to decide whether to report or let it go?

Worked in claims for years. The scenario you're worried about — other driver fabricating injuries and pointing at you — is rare when there's no police report and no witnesses placing you at fault. Without a report, a plate match, or any physical evidence of contact on their vehicle, a claim against you would go basically nowhere. That said, if you happen to remember any details about the truck (color, rough make, partial plate), jot them down now while it's fresh. You'd be surprised what little details matter later.

Not legal advice, but your instinct to document is the right one. Even a quick email to yourself timestamping what happened, where, and what the truck looked like creates a record. If the other driver ever did surface with a claim — highly unlikely given the circumstances — having your own contemporaneous notes helps establish your version of events. The lack of any police report actually cuts both ways: it doesn't hurt you if there's no record showing fault either.

On the police report question — you can often file a self-report through your state's DMV or DOT website even when an officer won't come out. It's sometimes called a 'driver's report of accident' or similar. It creates an official paper trail without needing law enforcement to agree it's worth their time. Might be worth Googling your state's version of that form just to have something dated and on record.

Almost the exact same thing happened to me on an on-ramp about two years ago. No damage, other driver bolted. I ended up calling my insurance just to log what they call a 'no-fault incident report' — no claim filed, just a note on the account. My rates didn't change and I felt way better having a timestamp on record in case anything weird came up later. Definitely worth a quick call just to document it.

Here's my concern: if you call your insurer and describe a contact between vehicles, some adjusters will open an actual claim whether you want them to or not. Ask very specifically upfront whether you can log an informational note only without triggering a claim. Get the rep's name and write it down. Insurers can be sneaky about how they categorize these calls.

Ugh that sounds so stressful, I hate when people just drive off like that. Glad you're physically okay though! I'd probably be just as paranoid about it as you are. Hope you get some peace of mind soon.

Did the timeline change anything for you? Mine dragged on for weeks.

No damage, no injury, no plate — there's not much to work with here honestly. Call your insurance, tell them exactly what you told us, and ask how to log it without filing a claim. Then let it go. Stressing over a phantom claim from a driver who has zero evidence against you is going to eat you alive for nothing.

Just want to flag — keep an eye on how your neck and shoulders feel over the next 48-72 hours. Adrenaline is really good at masking soreness right after impact. You might feel totally fine today and wake up stiff tomorrow. If anything develops, see someone and make sure it gets documented medically, even if it seems minor. Better to have a record and not need it.

Same boat here. Did anyone mention a deadline to watch out for?
