Did anyone see the highway on-ramp crash near the fuel plaza this morning?

Long shot but I figured I'd ask here — was anyone traveling eastbound on the interstate around the big truck stop off exit 47 this morning, maybe around 6:45 AM?

I was heading into work when traffic just stopped dead. By the time I crept past, there was a smaller sedan wedged up against the side of a semi that looked like it had been trying to merge from the fuel plaza access road back onto the highway. The whole front corner of the car was just destroyed.

I didn't stop because honestly I panicked and there were already people pulled over and what looked like a trucker on his phone, so I assumed 911 was already called. But I've been thinking about it all day and feeling guilty.

Here's the thing — the geometry of that exit is genuinely confusing. The fuel plaza sits at kind of an awkward angle and big rigs pulling back toward the on-ramp have to swing wide right across the lane where cars are already accelerating. I've almost been clipped there myself.

If whoever was in that sedan ends up here somehow — I hope you're okay. And if anyone else drove by and actually stopped or has more details, I'd love to know the driver was alright.

Also wondering — if a truck pulls out of a commercial property like that and causes a crash, who's actually liable? The driver? The trucking company? The fuel plaza for having a bad layout? Just trying to understand this for my own peace of mind.

I got hit in almost exactly this kind of situation two years ago — truck pulling out of a weigh station lot cut right across my lane and I had nowhere to go. The trucking company tried to blame me for 'speeding up to cut him off' which was absolutely insane. Hopefully the person in that sedan has witnesses or dashcam footage because it makes a huge difference.

Wish I had seen this a month ago — would have saved me a lot of stress.

Not legal advice, but generally speaking when a commercial truck is involved, liability can extend beyond just the driver — the trucking company, and sometimes even the property owner if their exit design creates a known hazard, can all potentially be in the picture. These cases move fast in terms of preserving evidence like trucking logs and surveillance footage, so if the person in that car is out there, time matters. Again, not legal advice, just context.

The trucking company's insurer is going to come out hard trying to minimize this. They have accident response teams that show up before the tow truck is even gone. If that driver is reading this — please don't give a recorded statement to anyone before talking to someone in your corner first.

This is exactly what I needed to read today. Thank you.

That fuel plaza access road angle you're describing is exactly the kind of thing that shows up in prior incident reports. I used to work claims and when we had a commercial property with repeat near-misses at an exit, there was always a paper trail — complaints to the property, maybe prior small claims. A good attorney would subpoena that stuff. Just saying, it's not always just the driver's fault.

If the front corner of the car was that badly damaged, the person inside may be dealing with more than just obvious injuries. Adrenaline masks a lot in those first hours. If they walked away thinking they were fine, they should still get checked out — chest, knees, neck especially. Sometimes the real pain shows up two or three days later and by then people feel like it's 'too late' to document it. It's not.

That lines up with what my adjuster told me too.

Don't feel guilty that you didn't stop — you made sure help was already there and kept traffic moving. You're clearly a caring person just for posting this hoping they're okay. I hope they find this thread somehow.

Dashcam. If you have one, save that footage right now before it loops over. Even a partial view of the aftermath could establish where the vehicles ended up, which tells its own story about who was where. Don't wait.

How sure are you the truck was actually pulling out and not already on the road? I ask because the way you describe it — 'trying to merge from the access road' — I'm wondering if you actually saw the start of it or just the aftermath. Not doubting you, just thinking about what a witness account would actually establish.
