Anyone ever reached out to the at-fault driver after everything was almost settled?

This might sound strange but bear with me.

My crash was almost two years ago now. Rear-ended at a stoplight, multiple surgeries, the whole nightmare. My attorney says we're genuinely close to wrapping up the claim and I've been doing a lot of reflecting.

I keep thinking about the other driver. From everything I could find, he's just a regular guy — works a normal job, has a family, probably felt awful about what happened. It really did seem like a genuine moment of distraction, not recklessness.

I'm not angry at him anymore. I was for a long time. But I kind of want to write him a short letter — not to rehash anything, not to guilt him, just... I don't know. Closure maybe? Let him know I'm going to be okay? I'm not even sure he knows how long my recovery took or why everything dragged out.

A few things I'm genuinely curious about:

  • Does his insurance company ever loop him in on how long a claim took or why?
  • Is there any reason reaching out could be a bad idea at this stage (legally or otherwise)?
  • Has anyone here actually done something like this?

I'm not looking to start a friendship or anything weird. It just feels unfinished in a human way that a settlement check won't actually fix. My therapist actually encouraged me to think about what "closure" really means to me, and this keeps coming up.

Maybe I won't send it. Maybe I'll write it and burn it. But I'm curious if anyone else has felt this pull.

I felt the exact same thing after my settlement finalized. I never sent the letter but I wrote it, and honestly just writing it helped more than I expected. I don't think the other driver had any idea how long my recovery went — I doubt insurers bother keeping them updated once the claim moves past the initial report stage.

Saving this whole thread. Really appreciate the honesty here.

Seconding this. The same approach worked for me last year.

Not legal advice, but timing matters here — I'd strongly suggest waiting until everything is fully signed and funded before sending anything. Even a kind, well-intentioned letter could theoretically complicate things if the other party's insurer somehow got wind of it before closing. Once it's done and done? That's your call as a human being.

Going through something similar right now. Did following up actually move the needle for you?

Just be careful. I know your intentions are good, but anything in writing that reaches the other driver could find its way back to the insurance company. Adjusters are always looking for angles, even late in the game. Wait until that check clears and the release is signed.

What do you actually hope to get out of it? I'm not trying to be harsh — genuine question. If it's closure for yourself, writing it privately might do the same thing. If you're hoping he responds a certain way or acknowledges what you went through, that's a little riskier emotionally because you can't control his reaction.

Speaking from my old job — no, we almost never kept at-fault drivers updated on claim timelines or why things were still open. They get a notification that a claim was filed against their policy and then they basically hear nothing until it's closed. He probably has no idea it took this long or why. That's just how it works.

Honestly this made me tear up a little. The fact that you're not carrying hatred after everything you went through says a lot about you. Whatever you decide — send it, don't send it, burn it — you deserve peace.

I've seen patients go through long recoveries and the emotional piece is so real and so underestimated. What you're describing — wanting to close the loop with another human — is actually a pretty healthy instinct. Just make sure you're doing it for you and not to manage his feelings. You've been through enough.

Write the letter, wait until settlement is 100% complete and funds are in your account, then decide if you still want to send it. Simple as that. A lot of times the urge fades once the legal stuff is actually finished.

This is exactly what I needed to read today. Thank you.
