Adjuster quietly closed my UMPD claim without telling me — what do I do now?

Still kind of in shock about this so bear with me.

About six weeks ago someone hit my parked car while I was at work. Just came out at the end of my shift and the whole rear quarter panel was caved in. Whoever did it left a note — at least they did that — but when I ran their plate through the DMV lookup tool it came back with a flag, and sure enough my adjuster eventually confirmed the other driver had no active insurance at the time of the hit.

Here's where it gets weird. I have uninsured motorist property damage (UMPD) on my policy — I specifically remember adding it — but I do not have full collision coverage. My UMPD cap is pretty low, definitely not enough to cover the repair estimate I got, plus the tow bill, the rental car days I already paid out of pocket, and the registration fees on a car I can barely drive right now.

I emailed my adjuster two weeks ago asking for a status update. Nothing. Called three times. Voicemail. Then yesterday I logged into the claims portal and the status just says "Closed." No letter, no email, no call, no explanation. Just… closed.

I never received a settlement offer. I never signed anything. I never agreed to close this.

My total out-of-pocket is already well past what my UMPD limit covers, so I was already planning to go after the at-fault driver personally for the gap. But now I'm panicking that a closed claim status somehow messes that up.

Has anyone had a claim closed on them without warning like this? Do I call, write a formal letter, what? And does a closed claim affect my ability to still pursue the uninsured driver directly? I feel completely blindsided.

This happened to me almost exactly. Adjuster closed my claim and I only found out because I randomly checked the app. Turns out they deemed it "unable to contact" after my one voicemail went unanswered on THEIR end — like they tried once and gave up. I had to escalate to a supervisor and file a written complaint to get it reopened. Don't just call, put everything in writing via email so you have a paper trail of every contact attempt.

I used to work claims and honestly? Files get closed for dumb administrative reasons all the time — sometimes it's an auto-close after a certain number of inactive days, sometimes an adjuster just moves their queue along. It does NOT necessarily mean your rights are gone. The key thing is to request in writing that the claim be formally reopened and document the date you discovered the closure. Keep that email. If they resist reopening, escalate to their claims manager and CC your state's department of insurance on the correspondence — that gets attention fast.

I wouldn't trust anything the adjuster tells you over the phone at this point. They already closed your claim without telling you — why would they give you accurate info now? Get everything in writing. Request written confirmation of WHY it was closed, the exact date it was closed, and the name of every person who touched the file. Adjusters bank on people not pushing back.

A few things worth knowing here (not legal advice, just process stuff): First, a unilaterally closed claim doesn't erase your right to pursue the uninsured driver — those are two separate things. Second, check your policy for the UMPD section specifically; there's usually a window to dispute a claim decision and a process for it. Third, your state's department of insurance has a formal complaint process that insurers take seriously. Filing one can sometimes shake loose a response when phone calls don't. I'd also strongly suggest getting a PI attorney to at least review the situation — many do free consults for exactly this.

Ugh I'm so sorry, this sounds absolutely exhausting on top of an already stressful situation. You did everything right — you filed, you followed up, you were patient. The fact that they closed it with zero communication is honestly infuriating. Please don't let them wear you down into just accepting this.

Not legal advice, but I'd flag two things: (1) closing a claim without notification or a denial letter may actually be a bad-faith insurance practice depending on your state — worth looking into. (2) Your ability to sue the at-fault driver personally for amounts above your UMPD cap is generally independent of your insurance claim, but statutes of limitations vary by state, so don't wait on that piece. The clock may already be running.

Following up on this — any update on how it turned out?

Stop calling. Email only from here on out. Subject line: "Formal Request to Reopen Claim #[your number] — Closed Without Notice or Settlement." Keep it short and factual. If you don't get a response within five business days, file a complaint with your state insurance commissioner. That's the move.

Were you injured at all, even minor stuff? I know you're focused on the car right now, which makes sense, but if you have any soreness — even stuff you've been ignoring — please see a doctor and document it. Stress from situations like this can also mask pain signals. Just making sure you're not losing track of your own health in the middle of all this chaos.
