After a car accident, one of the first calls you need to make is to your insurance company. But finding the right claims number — not the sales line, not the general customer service number — can be frustrating when you're stressed and in pain.

Here's every major auto insurance company's claims department phone number, what to have ready before you call, and what to say (and not say) on that first call.

What to Have Ready Before You Call

Gather this information before dialing — it will make the call faster and easier:

  1. Your policy number (on your insurance card or app)
  2. Date, time, and location of the accident
  3. Police report number (the officer gives you this at the scene)
  4. Other driver's name, phone number, and insurance information
  5. A brief description of what happened (stick to facts, not opinions)
  6. Names and contact info for any witnesses
  7. Your doctor's name if you've already sought treatment

What to Say on the Call

Keep it simple and factual:

  • "I was involved in a car accident on [date] at [location]. I'd like to file a claim."
  • "The police report number is [number]."
  • "I'm currently receiving medical treatment for injuries sustained in the accident."
  • "I'd like to understand next steps for my claim."

What NOT to Say

This is critical — the wrong words on this first call can hurt your claim:

  • Don't say "I'm fine" or "I wasn't hurt." You may not know the full extent of your injuries yet. Adrenaline masks pain. Soft tissue injuries can take days to appear.
  • Don't say "It was my fault" or "I think I caused it." Fault determination is complex and involves police reports, witness statements, and sometimes accident reconstruction. Don't make that determination yourself.
  • Don't agree to a recorded statement. Many insurance companies will ask to record the call. You are not required to consent. Politely decline: "I'd prefer not to give a recorded statement at this time."
  • Don't accept any settlement offer on the first call. If they offer money, it's almost certainly far less than your claim is worth. You have no obligation to accept immediately.
  • Don't discuss your injuries in detail. Say "I'm receiving medical treatment" and leave it at that. Detailed injury descriptions on a recorded line can be used against you.

When to Call

Call your own insurance company as soon as possible — ideally the same day as the accident or the next morning. Most policies require "prompt notification" as a condition of coverage. Waiting too long can give your insurer grounds to deny your claim.

Do NOT call the other driver's insurance company until you've spoken with a lawyer. Their adjuster will call you — and when they do, you'll want to be prepared. See our guide on what not to say when the other driver's insurance calls.

Your Insurance vs. Their Insurance

| | Your Insurance | Their Insurance | |---|---|---| | Who it represents | You (but still trying to minimize payout) | The other driver (definitely trying to minimize payout) | | When to call | Same day or next morning | Only after consulting a lawyer | | Recorded statement? | You can decline | You should decline | | Settlement offer? | Don't accept on first call | Definitely don't accept |
